Gutierrez on Mayor Duterte disowning his so-called “apology” for rape joke: “Hindi marunong kumilala ng pagkakamali”

[English]
Mayor Duterte has spoken. He was not the one who asked for an apology, it was his staff that made this. Is this who we want to become President? Someone who cannot recognize when made a mistake and would insist that he is right? Even his own people knows he made a mistake and are embarrassed for him. Compare him to Mar who is respected by everyone, even by his rivals. They copy his programs and platform, even his quotes.###

Statement of Rep. Gutierrez on Mayor Duterte kowtowing to China

[English]
Loyalty to the country is the most basic value we need from a President. This is a value absent from Mayor Duterte’s psyche. For a train, he would sell not only our country’s territory, but also the livelihood of our fishermen and the food of our countrymen. Is this what they call courage? What else would he sell? Our countrymen can rely on Mar to stop whatever dark plans Mayor Duterte has.###

Gutierrez challenges other presidential bets to make a stand on West PH Sea issue amid Chinese incursion anew

The Roxas campaign on Thursday challenged other presidential candidates to follow the example of its standard-bearer Mar Roxas who vowed to fight for the country’s sovereignty amid China’s continued encroachment in the West Philippine Sea.

Rep. Barry Gutierrez, Daang Matuwid spokesperson, said that other presidential candidates should now speak out and make a stand on the West Philippine Sea dispute between the Philippines and China after the latter continues its creeping invasion and massive reclamation activities in the disputed territory.

“We challenge the other candidates who have not stood up for what is ours, to come out, make a stand, and speak out – how low will you bow to China? For a true leader, politics always takes a back step when sovereignty is at hand,” Gutierrez said.

Gutierrez cited Roxas’ clear stand on the West Philippine Sea dispute.

Roxas earlier vowed to fight for the country’s territorial sovereignty and said he will seek for treaties with allied countries to strengthen the Philippines defensive capability.

The LP standard-bearer particularly noted the harassment being done by Chinese ships against Filipino fishermen in the West Philippine Sea.

“Let’s support Mar who stood by what is ours and is ready to fight for our country,” Gutierrez said.

On Tuesday, China lighted a 55-meter high lighthouse on Subi Reef, which is being claimed by the Philippines and Vietnam, in the West Philippine Sea.

Gutierrez said that such a move clearly showed that China will push for its claim of the entire Kalayaan Island Group or the Spratlys.

“China continues to encroach on our territory. The lighting of the lighthouse is a clear symbol of their intention to permanently claim the sea that gives our fishermen livelihood and gives food to our countrymen, contrary to their claims of peaceful intentions,” Gutierrez said.

“We should not allow ourselves to give in to fear and starve in our own land,” he concluded.###

Statement of Rep. Gutierrez on the China lighthouse in the West Philippine Sea

Gutierrez calls out Duterte camp for harassment of Roxas’ OFW supporter: Not amusing

“Maging disente po tayo.”

The call was made by Daang Matuwid spokesperson and Akbayan Rep. Barry Gutierrez after the reported harassments of Duterte supporters of an Overseas Filipino Worker (OFW) in Hong Kong.

Marites Palma, who is working in Hong Kong and supporter of Roxas, has been receiving hostile online attacks after coming out recently on social media to dispel the ‘untruth’ being circulated by the Duterte camp about a photo of Mar Roxas taken during the Roxas-Robredo campaign rally in Hong Kong over the weekend.

A supporter of Mayor Rodrigo Duterte has uploaded the photo showing Mar Roxas listening intently to an OFW supporter speak and surrounded by a few others, and “miscaptioning” it as Roxas ‘almost conceding defeat’ following their rally which the supporter claimed, shows that “Duterte has captured the OFW votes.”

“Maging disente tayo.

Simulan mo sa iyong sarili, Mayor,” the spokesperson added.

Setting the record straight

Palma, who attended the Roxas-Robredo rally and was the one talking to Roxas when the photo was snapped, responded to the camp of Duterte and his supporters to set the record straight.

In her Facebook personal page, she said, “Ako po yung nakasuot ng blue shirt [sa larawan].

The Roxas camp confirmed that the photo was taken after the campaign rally was ended. Roxas, who was then waiting for running mate, Vice Presidential candidate Leni Robredo to finish her interview, chose to listen to a few of their supporters who stayed behind to share their issues and concerns.###

Statement of Rep. Gutierrez on the Kidapawan incident

[English]
Let’s be clear: It is not acceptable that people died and were injured in Kidapawan. It is appalling that this happened, and we should do everything we can to make sure this does not happen again. There should be an exhaustive investigation and those responsible should be punished. There should also be a permanent solution to the issue of hunger and poverty. But it is also not right to use this tragedy to further the political ambitions of a few.

Farmers’ lives are not tools. Their poverty and hunger should not be exploited for political ends. We also need to know—were our farmers deceived? Were they used to allow a certain few to grandstand? In answering these questions, we can see the whole story. We will know all who must answer for what happened in Kidapawan. Real justice begins with the truth.

Rep. Gutierrez gives 4Ps pointer to Sen. Poe: indigent fishermen already part of 4Ps

We would like to remind Senator Poe, fishermen who are most in need of assistance are already a part of 4Ps. 4Ps is based on the needs of the beneficiaries, regardless of the sector they belong to. As far as we know, this was already explained to the Senator by DSWD in their budget hearing in the Senate. From the very beginning of the 4Ps program, the Aquino administration has wanted to expand it to assist as many people as possible. Its continued expansion is part of Mar’s plans. We thank her for support for our platform. FYI.
